October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month — a perfect time to pause and make sure we’re all staying safe on the internet. The online world helps our Koolen-de Vries Syndrome (KdVS) community stay connected no matter where we live. We share stories, support one another, and celebrate every milestone together.
But just like we teach our kids to be safe in the real world, it’s just as important to stay safe online, too. Here are some easy ways we can all protect ourselves — and each other — while enjoying the good parts of being connected.
Before posting, think about what you’re sharing. Try to avoid including full names, birthdays, addresses, or medical details. Sharing general updates (“We had a great doctor visit!”) is a wonderful way to connect without revealing too much.
Pick passwords that are hard for others to guess — use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. It helps to use different passwords for each account or a password manager to keep track of them.
Check your privacy settings so only people you know can see what you post. If you join new groups or pages, make sure they’re real and run by trusted people (like the official KdVS Foundation or other established organizations).
Sadly, some people online try to take advantage of families by offering fake cures or asking for money. If something feels off, trust your instincts. You can always double-check with a Foundation leader, another parent, or your medical team before responding.
If your child or teen likes to post or chat online, take time to talk about what’s okay to share. Encourage them to ask you if they’re unsure about something. Staying safe online is a team effort!
The safest places to connect are through the KdVS Foundation’s website, official social media pages, and private support groups. These spaces are moderated and meant to protect everyone’s privacy.
If you ever get a strange message, see a post that doesn’t feel right, or worry someone might be using your photos or information inappropriately — reach out. The Foundation team or other trusted community members are always here to help.
Our KdVS family is strong, caring, and full of heart. By practicing good cyber safety, we can keep our online spaces just as welcoming and safe as our in-person ones. Let’s continue to look out for each other — and keep our community shining bright, both on and offline. 🌟
