Ashley loves everyone, but most of all she LOVES her niece Emily!

How did you feel when your child was first diagnosed?

Relieved that we finally had a name for her condition at the age of 31

What does your KdVS individual love the most?

She loves her niece Emily the most and is a bit obsessed with her

How does KdVS affect your child?

She is so happy almost all of the time! She is high functioning and does not have seizures, so we count ourselves as lucky

How has KdVS affected your entire family?

I believe it has taught us all patience and understanding for all special needs people. We have met so many wonderful special needs people through Special Olympics over the years and have forged lifelong friendships with them and their families

What is the hardest part about having KdVS?

Probably the stigma of just having a learning disorder

What is the hardest part about being a KdVS parent?

Knowing that there are certain things that she'll never be able to do, like have her own family, or get married

What is the biggest misconception about being a KdVS parent or an individual with KdVS?

That it is a "burden" to have a special needs child. It's a blessing and we cherish each moment with her

What would you tell newly diagnosed parents about KdVS?

Don't compare your child....not with normal children OR KdVS children. They are all so different and end up with varying degrees of development, and delays, so don't go into it thinking that "this" is going to be what my child can do, or what they will be like.

What would you tell doctors, teachers and therapists about KdVS individuals?

Repeat, repeat, repeat. For my child anyway, the best way she learns is by MUCH repetition
